Education Award Recipient

Christen A. Sundquist, nominated by City of Elgin, is a tireless advocate for historic preservation in Elgin. Christen educates residents and visitors about the treasures that make up the Elgin housing stock.

Hired three years ago as a Historic Preservation Specialist for the City of Elgin, Christen helped create the award winning Historic Elgin website. She continually updates the website for additional historic sites. For the past four years, Christen has written all the docent speeches for the Gifford Park Association House Walk. She contributed to the local designation of Elgin’s Bungalow Thematic Historic District and organized the Annual Mayor’s Awards. During the 2017 National Trust for Historic Preservation annual conference she requested that Elgin be considered for a Mid Century Architecture field study and helped lead the tour of forty architects bringing national recognition to Elgin.

Christen’s participation in many of Elgin’s historical events are examples of her enthusiasm for historic preservation and her desire to share her knowledge with broad audiences.

For this, and much more, Christen A. Sundquist has been chosen for the 2018 Harriet Gifford & Hattie Griffin Award for Education.
